The CPU combines a microprocessor, integrated power supply, input and output circuits, built-in PROFINET,high-speed motion control I/O, and onboard analog inputs into a compact enclosure to form a powerful controller.  After you download the user program, the CPU will contain the logic required to monitor the devices in your application.  The CPU monitors inputs and changes outputs based on user program logic, which can include Boolean logic, counting, timing, complex math operations, and communication with other smart devices.

The CPU provides a PROFINET port for communication via the PROFINET network.  Additional modules can also be used for communication via PROFIBUS, GPRS, RS485 or RS232 networks.

The S7-1200PLC has several safety functions for protecting access to the CPU and control programs:

● Each CPU provides a password protection function that allows the user to configure access rights to the CPU functions.

● You can use "Proprietary Technology Protection" to hide code in a specific block.

● You can use copy protection to bind a program to a specific memory card or CPU.

Each CPU provides a dedicated HMI connection to support up to 3 HMI devices.  The total number of supported HMIs is affected by the HMI panel type in the configuration.  For example, you can connect up to 3 SIMATIC Basic Panels to the CPU or up to two SIMATIC Comfort Panels and one additional Basic Panel.  Different CPU models offer a wide range of features and functions that help users create effective solutions for different applications.

Delayed interrupts and cyclic interrupts use the same resources in the CPU.  The sum of time-delay interrupts and loop interrupts can only be four.  There can be no 4 delayed interrupts and 4 cyclic interrupts.

The TS Adapter allows the user to connect various communication interfaces to the PROFINET port of the CPU.  Install the TS Adapter on the left side of the CPU and connect the TS Adapter Module (up to 3) to the TS Adapter.

As visualization becomes a standard component of most machine designs, the SIMATIC HMI Basic Panel provides touch screen devices for performing basic operator monitoring tasks.

Installation size and clearance requirements:

The S7-1200 PLC is designed to be easy to install.  The compact design facilitates efficient use of space.

Each CPU, SM, CM and CP is supported for mounting on a DIN rail or panel.  Secure the device to the rail using the DIN rail clips on the module.  The internal dimensions of the hole in the DIN clip on the device are 4.3 mm.  The clip can be snapped into an extended position to mount the device directly to the screw mounting position on the panel.  It is important to keep the equipment isolated from thermal radiation, high voltage and electrical noise.  Leave enough clearance for cooling and wiring.  A 25 mm heat zone must be placed above and below the unit for free air circulation.
